What's The Deal with Perimenopause & Body Odor?

What's The Deal with Perimenopause & Body Odor?

by Sarah Thomas

Perimenopause. What does that even mean?

In Latin, the prefix peri means around. So although the medical profession does not use the term, in a nutshell, perimenopause is premenopause. It is the transitional phase leading up to menopause.

During perimenopause, a woman's hormone levels, particularly estrogen and progesterone, begin to fluctuate, leading to irregular menstrual cycles. This phase can last anywhere from a few months to several years.

When Can You Expect To Start Experiencing Perimenopause?

It typically starts several years before menopause but will vary from one woman to the next. Some women will feel the effects of perimenopause around the age of 35 to 45.

It's important to note that even though fertility declines during perimenopause, pregnancy is still possible, so contraception should still be considered until a woman has reached menopause.

And just as a refresher, menopause is simply marked when a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. This typically occurs around the age of 45 to 55, but the timing can vary for each individual.

Perimenopause Symptoms May Include:

  • Irregular periods
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Mood swings
  • Memory loss
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Changes in libido
  • Changes in body odor

We’re here to talk about that last bullet - changes in body odor.

Why Does Body Odor Change During Perimenopause?

Some women report a change in body odor as they get closer to menopause, even though they haven’t changed their hygiene habits. Their tried and true deodorants start to fail them, and they wonder what is going on.

Hormonal changes, increased sweating with hot flashes and night sweats, and urinary incontinence can all contribute to perimenopause odor.

It’s important to point out that hormonal changes can cause our sense of smell to become more acute as we approach menopause (remember the pregnancy days and all of a sudden becoming intensely aware of every single smell within a city block?)

So take heart because even if you are hyperaware of your own perimenopausal sweat and odor changes, chances are you’re the only one taking note.
